Coolant Flush Service

Flushing the coolant system is an important maintenance task that helps keep your engine running smoothly and prevents overheating. Here’s a guide on how to perform a coolant flush:

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Coolant (specified for your vehicle)
  • Distilled water
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Hose (optional)
  • Pliers or screwdriver (for hose clamps)
  • Safety glasses and gloves

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Prepare Your Vehicle:
    • Park your vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
    • Allow the engine to cool completely before starting the flush.
  2. Locate the Radiator Drain Valve:
    • Open the hood and locate the radiator drain valve. It’s typically located at the bottom of the radiator.
  3. Place the Drain Pan:
    • Position the drain pan underneath the radiator drain valve to catch the old coolant.
  4. Drain the Coolant:
    • Use pliers or a screwdriver to open the radiator drain valve.
    • Allow the old coolant to drain completely into the drain pan.
    • You may need to remove the radiator cap to facilitate draining.
  5. Flush the System:
    • Close the radiator drain valve once all the coolant has drained.
    • Fill the radiator with water using a hose or funnel until it’s full.
    • Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes with the radiator cap off. This helps circulate the water through the system and flush out any remaining coolant.
  6. Drain the Water:
    • Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
    • Open the radiator drain valve again to drain the water from the system.
    • Repeat this step until the drained water runs clear, indicating that the system is thoroughly flushed.
  7. Refill with Coolant:
    • Close the radiator drain valve once again.
    • Mix the coolant with distilled water according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
    • Use a funnel to pour the coolant mixture into the radiator until it’s full.
  8. Bleed the Air:
    • Start the engine and let it run with the radiator cap off.
    • Squeeze the upper radiator hose to help release any trapped air bubbles from the system.
    • Continue adding coolant mixture as needed until the radiator is full and no more air bubbles escape.
  9. Replace the Radiator Cap:
    • Once the system is properly filled, replace the radiator cap securely.
  10. Check for Leaks:
    • Inspect the radiator and hoses for any signs of leaks.
    • Tighten hose clamps or fittings if necessary.
  11. Dispose of Old Coolant:
    • Properly dispose of the old coolant according to local regulations. Coolant is toxic and should not be poured down the drain.

Performing a coolant flush at regular intervals helps maintain your vehicle’s cooling system and prevents corrosion and overheating. If you’re unsure about performing this task yourself, consult a professional mechanic for assistance.
